Notice of Resignation/Separation

A University staff employee separating from his/her position must give proper notice. Notice of termination is important to allow the employer time to post the job vacancy and to recruit and train a replacement.

A salaried employee is required to give one month's notice (thirty days) before leaving his/her position. Wage employees should normally give a two-week notice (fourteen days). UVaTEMPs employees are requested to give a one-week notice (seven days) if possible.

This policy does not prevent the employee and his/her supervisor from jointly agreeing to a shorter or longer notice period. Employees who are leaving to go to another department within the University may pursue a job-sharing arrangement (overlap period) to help in the transition. This may help to relieve pressures for the period of time the employee is needed by both departments. However, the affected employee should never be asked to coordinate this arrangement between the departments.
