Employee Service Awards Policy and Procedure

The University honors each classified, University Staff, and Medical Center non-faculty long-service employee at an annual service awards ceremony or banquet and presents him/her with a service award certificate, jewelry, and/or an appropriate gift. Employees who have completed ten years of non-faculty service and each succeeding five years of service will be honored.

The service awards program is planned by a service awards committee whose members are chosen each year by University Human Resources. Each member serves two or three years. In membership selection, an effort is made to appoint a classified employee from a representative cross section of the University organization.

At the beginning of each year, a list of employees who (according to the University Human Resources' records) are due to receive awards are sent to each department. The department is asked to make any corrections and to indicate the employee's name as it is to appear on the service award certificate.

Immediately before the ceremony and banquet, University Human Resources will notify senior administration and confirm the names of employees scheduled as award recipients.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
  1. This program is applicable to classified salaried staff of the University academic divisions, to University Staff, and to non-faculty salaried staff of the Medical Center.  This program does not apply to faculty or students.  Prior faculty service or time spent as a student is not creditable.

  2. Service in any department is creditable.

  3. Service does not have to be continuous.  The total amount of employment is      creditable even though it has been interrupted.

  4. Military Leave service is creditable provided the employee left the University for Military Service and returned according to leave regulations.

  5. Leave without pay to attend school is creditable if such service was recorded and certified by the supervisor.

  6. Service on a wage basis is creditable if such service was appropriately recorded and was not faculty or student service.

  7. Salaried part-time employment is creditable service.

Service is computed as of July 1 of the award year.  Example:  An employee who was hired June 29, 1994 (with no breaks in service) would be eligible for a ten year award in 2004.

Outstanding Contribution Award

Each year the University will recognize publicly and express gratitude to certain non-faculty salaried employees whose service and contributions have far exceeded the usual and customary expectations of their positions. This program provides the opportunity for members of the University community to nominate employees who have made outstanding contributions. Nominees are restricted to satisfactory, non-probationary, salaried staff employees. Any member of the University community may make a nomination; however, employees may not nominate themselves.
