Honoring University Retirees

The University wants to honor each salaried staff employee who retires with ten or more years of service by the presentation of a certificate of retirement and public recognition for the years of service to the University.

A retiring employee should notify the Benefits Division in University Human Resources at least three months before retirement to complete the necessary paperwork. When the employee completes the retirement application, the Benefits Office will notify the Division of Employee Relations, which is responsible for providing a retirement certificate.

The Division of Employee Relations will contact the employee's department approximately four weeks prior to the date of retirement and provide departmental management a retirement certificate suitable for presentation so that the department can plan an appropriate occasion for honoring the retiree and presenting the certificate.

Any ceremonious occasion that might be held is solely at the discretion of the retiring employee's department. However, it is suggested that the vice president of the division in which the retiree is employed be involved in presenting the certificate to the retiree. This could be done by special arrangement in the home department during work hours. Another option would be to have the vice president present the certificate at a luncheon, dinner, or retirement party planned by the department to honor the retiree.
