Goodbye to Paper Timesheets

Mark your Calendars! Six months from now, on Sept. 14, 2009, the University will implement Self-Service Time and Leave (SSTL), the University's new on-line time and leave tracking system. Any employee who currently is required to report hours worked and leave taken, including Classified and University Staff, research assistants, wage, and student workers, will use the new system.

Self-Service Time and Leave will be accessed through the Integrated System's Employee Self-Service. You may already use Self-Service for things like viewing your payslip, changing your address, or printing your W-2s; tracking your time and leave is a new task you will perform using the same on-line tool.

In the new system, the employee puts in his or her actual time worked and/or leave taken. There are many advantages that come with this, including a standard work week, overtime pay included in the same pay period it is worked, and an end to the pay lags that sometimes occur around the end of the quarter in the current system (for example, the pay period around July 1).

One big change that comes with tracking time and leave on-line is the switch to a bi-weekly payroll. This means you will no longer be paid semi-monthly or monthly but every other Friday. To help you adjust to this change and the possible effect on your personal finances, we will be offering personal finance sessions, sponsored by the Faculty and Employee Assistance Program (FEAP) and the U.Va. Credit Union. The personal finance sessions will begin in late April and continue as long and as frequently as staff interest continues. More information about specific dates, time, and registration instructions will be sent out in early April.

If you don't regularly use Employee Self-Service, never fear: there is ample time to learn how. Later this year, UHR will offer basic computer usage classes as well as specific training on Self-Service and its many useful features.

There is much more to come! Learn more at www.hrs.virginia.edu/sstl, or talk to the person who handles human resources in your area. You can also call Payroll at 924-4350 or email payroll@virginia.edu with questions.

Sincerely,
