From the Desk of Susan Carkeek

Dear Colleagues,

By now many of you are familiar with HR Restructuring, an important University-wide effort to launch a state-of-the-art human resource system that offers many advantages over our current system. Designed with the input of over 200 of your fellow University employees, the new University Staff HR system will help us to recruit, develop and competitively compensate our people.

We offered an open comment period through June 30, and with that feedback we are now finalizing the details of the new system. Our next steps are to finalize policies and develop new procedures by the end of September, in time for the enrollment period that runs from Oct. 1 to Dec. 31, 2008. The new system takes effect Jan. 1, 2009.

We were fortunate to have so many volunteers during the design phase, but we are once again asking for your help!

University Human Resources is seeking dedicated volunteers to temporarily assist us in the capacity of “Peer Advisors” during the open enrollment period this fall. Peer Advisors play an important role in helping Classified Staff and A&P Faculty evaluate the benefits of converting to the new University Staff system. Confidential assistance is vital for those who are curious about the many benefits of the new University Staff system but have questions about how this might work for them. This is your chance to learn more about the new system and help your colleagues understand it.

There will be a number of resources available for staff during open enrollment, including UHR staff, supervisors around Grounds, and peer advisors. Peer Advisors will get specific training so that they can serve confidently in their role during open enrollment.

If you see yourself as someone who can impartially and confidentially advise others, please consider becoming a Peer Advisor.

Those interested in serving should send an email to hrrestructuring@virginia.edu or call 924-1484 no later than Wednesday, August 27.

For general information or questions about HR Restructuring please email us at HRrestructuring@virginia.edu or visit our website at http://www.hrs.virginia.edu/restructuring/.

Thank you again for your continued interest in and support of this important initiative.

Sincerely,

Susan
