UHR to Offer Revamped Employee Orientation Beginning August 1

From the Desk of Susan Carkeek

University Human Resources is pleased to announce the launch of a new faculty and staff orientation. Starting Aug. 1, we will host a comprehensive orientation experience that will provide an inviting and informative introduction to the University of Virginia. Designed to meet a new employee’s range of needs, the program will provide information on U.Va. history, structure, policies, and benefits.

With the change in format comes a change in location—orientation will now be held in Room 201 at the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) on Alderman Road. Free parking is available in the Scott Stadium lot adjacent to the AFC and will be clearly marked for “new employees” on orientation days. Staff orientations will continue to be held every Monday and faculty orientations every other Wednesday. Ideally, orientation would be a new employee’s first day of work.

Supervisors should be aware that the new orientation lasts from 8:00 a.m. until approximately 3:00 pm. The extended agenda gives us an opportunity to make a great first impression on our new colleagues, introducing them to everything from U.Va. lingo to the University’s core values. The longer orientation’s “one-stop shopping” means new faculty and staff can get their parking permits and their ID Card in one location. Time is also devoted to policies, payroll, training, and benefits, as well as a complimentary lunch and a tour of the Rotunda.

Policies, forms and reference materials are consolidated into one binder for the new employee’s use, along with a map of the University and a Community Resource Guide produced by the Office of Community Relations.

I think you’ll agree that orientation is an early and very tangible expression of how the University values its employees. UHR is very excited about this new and improved program, which we hope will give all of our new employees a great start at this wonderful institution. If you have any questions about the new orientation, please contact Raj Seneviratne at 924-6954 or rs9c@virginia.edu.
