Managers are encouraged to adopt a liberal leave policy during holiday periods to accommodate employee requests, so long as essential services continue to be provided. We recognize that due to business necessity some departments may be required to be open and will not be able to observe scheduled holidays. In those instances, essential University services should be maintained and compensatory leave awarded to those required to work. Employees who must work on a holiday should be given adequate advance notice for personal planning purposes. Questions regarding the provision of essential customer services should be directed to your respective vice president.
Governor Kaine approved additional 2007 holiday time as noted below:

This additional holiday time will be credited to Classified staff, University staff, and Research Assistants as compensatory special leave balances on the dates designated by the Governor and must be used within 12 months of the date earned. For twelve-month faculty, the additional 28 hours of leave granted by the Governor should be worked out with individual managers, and must be used by the end of the fiscal year in which they are credited.
