Additional Thanksgiving Holiday Time for Academic Division Employees

MEMORANDUM

DATE: November 22, 2002
TO: Deans, Department Heads and Other Administrative Officers
FROM: Thomas E. Gausvik
Chief Human Resource Officer
SUBJECT: Additional Thanksgiving Holiday Time for Academic Division Employees

Governor Warner has announced that employees will be granted an additional four (4) hours of paid time off for the Thanksgiving Holiday. Therefore, Academic Division (Agency 207) employees will receive an additional 4 hours of “float” time in the form of compensatory leave.

The four (4) hours of compensatory leave time will be credited automatically to salaried classified staff and research assistant leave balances during the November 25 through December 9 semi-monthly pay period in the category of “comp special leave.” Leave time will be prorated for part-time salaried employees. General faculty may take the additional four (4) hours of leave at the discretion of their managers.

Essential University operations will be maintained as required. In circumstances where employees may have to work on a designated holiday, compensatory leave will be awarded. Compensatory leave should be taken as soon as possible, but not later than 12 months following the designated holiday worked. Unused balances for the “comp spec leave” category will not be allowed to carry forward.

Managers are encouraged to give maximum consideration to the preferences of employees for using the additional compensatory leave to the extent that service to the public is not disrupted.

Information regarding holiday leave is available at http://www.hrs.virginia.edu/holiday.html. If you have further questions or concerns should contact the University Leave Center a 924-1426 or 924-4404.

Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving Holiday.
