| General Information for U.Va. Temps |
The University of Virginia's Temporary Service (U.Va. Temps) serves departments within the University that are in need of temporary help. If you are currently unemployed or if you work outside U.Va. in a part-time capacity and wish to increase your work hours, you may wish to apply for work through U.Va. Temps.
The purpose of the University's temporary service is to provide to departments flexibility and convenience in meeting their staffing needs. Temporary positions are considered "at-will" employment and may end at any time if the department determines:
- there is no longer a need for the position;
- there are no longer funds to support the position;
- the job match is inadequate, etc.
University departments make requests for temporary help based on their anticipated needs. After the placement is made, the department may find that their actual needs are different from the anticipated needs. In other words, as a temporary worker, you may be released from a U.Va. Temps assignment at any time, with or without a reason and/or with or without notice.
Initially a University department request a temporary employee from U.Va Temps through an on-line request -- usually to begin immediately. Based on the department's needs, the U.Va. Temps Coordinator searches the pool of applicants to locate someone who is qualified for the position and who is willing to work the required schedule. If you are called by U.Va. Temps, you will be given information about the assignment such as work duties and responsibilities, location, pay rate, anticipated duration of the assignment and work schedule. You will have an opportunity to ask any questions you may have. If you and the U.Va. Temps Coordinator determine that you are a match for the assignment, you will be given the supervisor's name, where to report, information on parking, instructions on how to submit your hours worked and how you will receive your pay check. If you accept a U.Va. Temps assignment, you will continue to be considered for other staff employment at the University as long as your on-line application remains active and you have specified an interest in employment other than through U.Va. Temps.
The majority of temporary assignments require office support skills such as word processing, dictaphone transcription, reception, filing and/or bookkeeping. U.Va. Temps also offers housekeeping assignments, generally for evening, night or weekend shifts. U.Va. Temps may also receive requests for temporary assignments in specialty areas such as health care providers, skilled crafts, laborers, computing, etc. Advertisements will occasionally be placed in local newspapers in order to attract and retain a qualified and available pool of applicants at all times.
The University of Virginia is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. U.Va. is committed to complying fully with the Americans with Disabilities.
