SUBJECT: UVA Travel Program announces Fall 2007 trip to Innsbruck Austria!

The UVA Travel Program is excited to announce our Fall 2007 trip to Innsbruck Austria!

Innsbruck is situated in the center of the Tyrol province of Austria and is a perfect base from which to explore the outlying areas. The city of Innsbruck is the Tyrolean’s region’s treasure house – historically, culturally and commercially.

The Tyrol region is very different from the rest of Austria. The frontier between the provinces of Salzburg and Tyrol is defined by mountains; four passes make passage possible.

As small as the province is, Tyrol is virtually the shop window of Austria. Its very name conjures up visions of great chains of never-ending snowcapped mountains; remote, winding Alpine valleys; rushing mountain torrents; and spectacular glaciers that rise out of the depths like brilliant, icy diamonds. In winter, you’ll find masses of deep, sparkling powder snow; unrivaled skiing and tobogganing; and bizarre winter carnivals with masked mummers. Throughout the year, there are villagers in lederhosen and broad-brimmed feathered hats, yodeling and zither music, and, of course, the sounds of those distinctive cowbells.

As if the sheer physical splendor of Tyrol weren’t enough, the region can look back on a history filled with romance. Up to the beginning of the 16th century, Tyrol was a powerful state in its own right, under a long line of counts and dukes, including personages of such varying fortunes as Friedl the Penniless and his son Sigmund the Wealthy. The province reached the zenith of its power under Emperor Maximilian I (1459-1519), when Innsbruck was the seat of the Holy Roman Empire. Maximilian’s tomb in Innsbruck gives ample evidence of the city’s onetime far-reaching glory.
