What is Career Planning?
Career Planning is more than just planning a job search. It's about making the most of your career, your education, and your life. Career Planning is ongoing process throughout life where people:
- EXPLORE their personal interests, abilities, career options and the world of work
- THINK choose options, develop career goals and plan strategies that support them
- ACT to achieve their career goals
Good career planning includes all 3 stages, and you may work through one or more at a time. Depending on what career stage you are working on, you need different kinds of information and skills. To help you decide which workshop is right for you now, the descriptions note which career step the workshop has been designed to support.

Rave Review Resumes: How to Develop Winning Resumes
Does the process of writing a resume strike fear in your heart? This workshop reveals the simple secrets of winning resumes. We will review standard resumes and CVs. You will take home plenty of tips and examples for future reference. A follow-up appointment with Faculty & Staff Career Services to review your final resume is recommended.
Bring along a resume or UVA Application if you have one, and a UVA or other job listing to use as your target. Contact UHR at 924-4598 or uvajobs@virginia.edu to arrange to get a copy of your application currently on file if you need it. (ACT)
Speak for yourself: How to Shine in Interviews
Are you a nail-biter when it comes to talking about yourself and your accomplishments? Many people are a little apprehensive about speaking up for themselves in interviews. This workshop focuses on preparation strategies and techniques for interviews. You will also take part in a brief mock interview. You'll leave with increased confidence when faced with tricky interview questions. (ACT)
Handling Career Plateaus: Revitalizing Your Career
In just about every job there comes a time when employees feel they have achieved the skills and experience they need to be successful. Without new job responsibilities or challenges, you can feel "stuck". We call it a "Career Plateau". It's a common occurrence, no matter how creative, skilled, or experienced you are, and it often seems to occur in midlife or midcareer. Join us to explore and discover paths to career growth and self-renewal. (THINK)
Choices: Career Planning
Research shows that people who develop a career plan with goals are more likely to succeed than people who don't. Setting career goals and making good career decisions are critical components to success -- and success is something only you can define. Everyone benefits when your life and career goals are in line with your work. This workshop helps you create your own career plan and take charge of your career. (THINK)
What's Next After Age 50: RE-tirement or PRO-tirement?
Are you nearing or past the big five-o and starting to think ahead? What will you do after you've cleaned out the garage and rearranged the closets? In this session we discuss what it means to age in our culture, and how to determine how "old" you really are. We consider what's really important to you after you leave work at UVA, and how to begin planning for post-UVA activities, based on your preferences for work and/or leisure in retirement. (THINK)

WHoos Hiring: How to Conduct a Successful Job or Career Search

In this workshop you'll learn the specific steps and resources that lead to a successful self-directed career or job search. We even reveal the secret to painless networking. For Supervisors: Coaching Employees Improved Performance Through Career Development
There is a strong connection between career satisfaction and employee energy and productivity. This workshop provides practical techniques to increase employee contribution, motivation and effectiveness. We examine typical case examples and develop and practice ways to address them. What you learn will be useful in daily management as well as with employee EWP learning plans and employee development. (ACT)
What Is Your Type of Career: Using the MBTI for Career Planning
Whether you are beginning your career, mid-career, looking for a change, or thinking about retirement, this workshop helps you understand your own career development and how to choose opportunities that best suit your unique talents. Using the MBTI as a way to understand the different ways people work, you'll identify your preferred personality type and how it affects your strengths, skills and career choices. (EXPLORE)

Making Impressions: Creating Great Cover Letters and Portfolios
A cover letter is often the first impression you make on a prospective employer. And you don't get a second chance to make a first impression! Portfolios are the "proof" you bring to an interview that helps you stand out from other candidates.
