If You Have a Baby or Adopt a Child
Life Events
Dependent children are eligible for coverage under your health plan. However, you must submit an application within the designated timeframe in order for them to be enrolled- dependents, including newborn babies, are not automatically covered under your policy.

Based on the Health Plan in which you are enrolled, there are specific rules about how much time you have to add your new baby. If you are covered as an active employee under Southern Health on the UVa Health Plan, you have 60 days from the date of birth or date of adoption or placement for adoption in order for coverage to be effective the first of the month of the date of event to add your baby and other eligible dependents. If you are covered under the MAMSI plan, you have 31 days to add your new baby. If you are a Retiree or a COBRA member on the UVA Health Plan, you have 31 days to submit the application for a mid year qualifying event, such as a birth or adoption.

What You Need to Do
To enroll your child or outer eligible dependent for coverage, you must complete a health plan application and provide a copy of the child's birth certificate, Hospital provided Proof of Birth letter, or court documentation verifying the adoption. Contact the University Human Resources Office of Employee Benefits for information.
You may not change your health care program at this time; you'll need to wait until the Open Enrollment period to do that.

When Coverage Begins
As long as you submit an application to add your child within the required time frame, coverage for your child will be effective the first of the month of the date of birth or adoption. If the change form is not returned to the Office of Employee Benefits within the timeframe above, coverage can only start at the beginning of the month following receipt the application, or for MAMSI members, on January 1 of the following year.

Other Benefits to Consider
As a result of your birth or adoption, you may also be able to make changes to some of your other benefits. For birth, adoption or placement for adoption, you can enroll yourself, the new child as well as any eligible dependent not already on your policy within the timeframes listed above for each health plan and the coverage is retroactive to the first of the month of the event date. Contact the Office of Employee Benefits for information about the following:
